Newlevant News 2011

The Family got evicted while scenes for the movie "Gone" were being shot in our house and made trips to NYC in March to survey schools and in August to install Hazel at SVA.

Hazel says: This spring, I finished my Associate's Degree at PCC, finally putting it in my rear-view after many years of taking classes there part-time. Over the summer, I sampled the best of the West Coast by attending as many music festivals as possible (Coachella, Sasquatch, Oregon Country Fair, and PDX Pop Now!), and also self-published a spoof coloring book, People of Coloring Book. After bidding adieu to my friends in the land of beards and bikes, I moved to New York to attend the School of Visual Arts, studying Cartooning! Living on my own in a Manhattan dorm has been a big step, but I relish the adventure of exploring the city. The coursework is very demanding both academically and creatively, and I sometimes feel like beating my head against my drawing table, but I've been rising to the occasion, learning a lot and making art that I'm proud of. I was recently hired as an editor of INK, SVA's student-run digital comics anthology, and I'm looking forward to helping refine and showcase the work of fellow talented students.

Marion says: Life is grand! Good friends, good health, good family, a good job. I've been working from home for the past year, in a real job that pays and everything. The occasional business trip to San Jose is helping me get past my fear of flying, and I'm learning new things, and practicing keeping that balance between work and the rest of life when work is lurking right there in the living room. Away from the computer, I have been dancing a lot. Still growing my waltz empire, and making slow progress with tango. It's been a creative year: I've been spinning (drop spindle: slow and portable), and knitting small things (my attention span is about one watch-cap). I've been sewing shirts, and silk-screening shirts (different shirts), and recaned several of the old cane-seat chairs.

Jack says: I still love data. My cycling totaled about 5330 miles (down about 450), about 1780 of them with Greg (up about 250), and about 700 with Diane. She & I bought a used travel tandem and took it on a trip to the coast and a trip across Missouri. I invented a game I call "Capture The Flag" where I try to ride streets my GPS shows I've not ridden in the last 7 years. If you're a fan of GoogleEarth, you might like this map, coloring streets of our region by how often I've ridden them. I've also been making maps for Metro's trail-count data and tools for another regional sidewalk inventory. And I did more contra-dance camps than ever, as far away as Idaho and San Luis Obisbo.
